NCC compliance standards
for EV charging?

Learn More

The National Construction Code (NCC) 2022 has come into force as of May 1st, 2023, and recognises the rising popularity of electric vehicles and their impact on energy consumption within buildings. As a result, the code now mandates the collection of individual time data for electric vehicle charging stations.

By monitoring the energy consumption associated with electric vehicle charging, building owners and operators can identify peak usage times, plan for optimal energy distribution, and implement strategies to accommodate the growing demand for electric vehicles.

Electric vehicle chargers

ABB AC & DC chargers

AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current) electric vehicle chargers are two types of chargers commonly used in electric vehicle charging infrastructure for commercial buildings. For a comprehensive electric vehicle charging infrastructure in a commercial building, a mix of both AC and DC chargers may be deployed to cater to different charging needs and offer a well-rounded and efficient charging experience for EV users.

  • ABB AC electric vehicle chargers

ABB’s Terra AC wallbox chargers supply electricity to electric vehicles by converting the AC power from the electrical grid into the DC power needed to charge the vehicle's battery. These chargers are typically more affordable to install and are suitable for slow to moderate charging speeds, making them ideal for destination charging at work or in shopping centres. AC chargers in Australia are typically classified as Level 2 and are available in single phase (7.4kW) or three phase (11-22kW).

  • ABB DC electric vehicle chargers

ABB’s Terra DC wallbox and fast chargers deliver direct current (DC) power to the vehicle's battery, bypassing the on-board charging module. This results in significantly faster charging speeds compared to AC chargers. DC chargers are available from 24kW with either a CCS2 (Combined Charging System) or CHAdeMO charging cable, which can provide high-power charging for EVs with compatible ports. DC chargers are best suited where quick turnaround times and high charging demands are essential.

Flexible power distribution

Powerduct power distribution

Powerduct Compact busway systems are an innovative solution to power electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in commercial buildings. Installed overhead, a Powerduct busway system is a safe, efficient, and concealed method of distributing power to multiple EV charging stations throughout the facility.

    • =600v, 50hz rated voltage
    • Fully compliant with AS/NZS 61439.6 – busbar trunking systems
    • Available in 100A, 160A and 250A options
    • 3D models - all layouts are provided in Revit, Cad and PDF formats
    • IP54 rated protection

Metering

NMI metering

NMI (National Meter Identifier) metering is a system used in Australia to identify electricity supply points uniquely. When it comes to electric vehicle (EV) charging for a commercial building, NMI metering plays a crucial role in accurately measuring and billing electricity usage for EV charging stations.

  • Individual charging point identification

Each EV charging station in the building is assigned a unique NMI. This identification allows precise tracking of electricity consumption for each charging point separately.

  • Accurate billing

With NMI metering, the building's management can accurately measure the electricity usage of each EV charging station. This data is crucial for billing individual users, tenants, or customers using the charging services.

  • Transparent reporting

NMI metering provides transparent reporting of electricity consumption, enabling facility managers to analyse usage patterns, peak charging times, and overall energy consumption related to EV charging.

  • Regulatory compliance

NMI metering ensures the commercial building meets regulatory requirements for accurate and transparent electricity billing. This compliance is essential for maintaining transparency and fairness in charging costs.

Power supplies

PULS power supplies

PULS power supplies are advanced and reliable components that play a critical role in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure for commercial buildings. These power supplies are designed to provide a stable and efficient source of electrical energy to various components within the charging system, ensuring smooth and safe charging operations.

  • High efficiency

Known for high energy efficiency, minimising energy losses during power conversion. This efficiency helps reduce the EV charging infrastructure's overall energy consumption and operating costs.

  • Reliability and durability

Built to withstand harsh conditions and demanding usage in commercial settings. They offer high levels of reliability, ensuring consistent performance over extended periods.

  • Robust design

Engineered robustly, providing protection against electrical fluctuations, short circuits, and overloads. This enhances the safety of the charging system and protects connected devices from potential damage.

  • Compact size

Compact and space-saving design allows easy integration into the limited spaces available in commercial buildings.

  • Low heat dissipation

Design minimises heat dissipation, which reduces the need for extensive cooling systems and contributes to a more environmentally friendly charging infrastructure.

  • Fast charging support

Provide high-power outputs required for fast-charging stations, catering to the needs of modern EVs capable of rapid charging.

Load management

Load Management

Load management is crucial in commercial buildings' as it optimises power distribution and usage to ensure a balanced and efficient charging experience for EV users while preventing strain on the building's electrical grid. By implementing load management, commercial buildings can efficiently accommodate a growing number of electric vehicles, enhance user experience, reduce energy costs, and contribute to a more sustainable and stable electrical grid.

Distribution boards

EV Distribution Board

Our electric vehicle (EV) charging distribution board for residential and commercial buildings is a specialised electrical panel designed to distribute power efficiently and safely to multiple EV charging stations within the facility. Its purpose is to accommodate the growing demand for EV charging while ensuring optimal load management and safety measures.

  • Power Capacity

Designed to handle a high-power capacity to supply electricity to multiple EV charging stations simultaneously.

  • Compliance

Complies with the National Construction Code 2022, safety standards, and regulations for EV charging stations.

  • Safety measures

Designed with a remote shutdown to isolate EV charging by pressing emergency stop button, signal from Fire Indication Panel (FIP), or load shedding signals. Earth fault protection, overload protection, and overcurrent (short-circuit) protection devices are also available.

  • Smart metering and monitoring

Incorporates smart metering and space for monitoring systems for outgoing circuits. When used together, facility managers can track electricity consumption, monitor charging station usage, and optimise charging schedules.

  • Space efficiency

Designed to optimise space usage while considering the potential need for future additions. It can be conveniently installed to provide easy access for maintenance and service.

  • Installation

Both wall-mounting and floor-standing options are available

*Note: DB can be provided fully loaded with RCBO’s and pre-wired with NMI rated KWh meters for each outgoing circuit if required.
