What is a load centre / electrical load centre?

A load centre (or load center) is a distribution point within an electrical installation: it receives power from the main supply and routes it to branch circuits via circuit breakers. It combines protection and organisation in a single enclosure.

What load centre sizes / dimensions are available?

IPD offers a variety of load centre sizes of 4, 6, 8, 12, 18, 24 and 36 poles each with enclosure dimensions matched to wiring space and device clearance. Outdoor weatherproof units are deeper and wider to accommodate cabling and ingress protection.

What is a metal load centre and when should I use one?

A metal load centre uses steel or similar metal enclosures offering superior durability for harsher environments. For indoor or clean installations, a polymer option may suffice; for tougher conditions, metal is preferred.

Do you offer outdoor / weatherproof / surface mount models?

Yes. IPD provides surface mount, weatherproof and outdoor rated (IP-rated) load centres, including 4, 6, 8, 12, 18, 24, 36 and 54-pole switchboards polycarbonate enclosure sizes. These are designed to resist rain, dust and UV exposure while maintaining safety and service access.

How do I choose between single phase vs 3-phase load centres?

Select a single-phase load centre for typical residential and light commercial installations. For larger loads or industrial facilities, choose a 3-phase model to balance load across phases. Ensure pole count and current rating meet your circuit and expansion needs.

      What about a 12-pole / 24-pole / 36-pole load centre?

These refer to how many circuit positions (poles) the unit supports. 12-pole load centre suits typical residential setups. A 24-pole or 36-pole model gives greater flexibility for expansion or high circuit count installations.

Flush mount vs surface mount – which is better?

Flush mount (recessed) units sit inside a wall and offer a neater install aesthetic but require construction space. Surface mount units install on the wall’s exterior—they offer easier access and are ideal where wall cavity depth is limited.

What protection ratings do your indoor and outdoor load centres have?

IPD’s indoor load centres are rated to IP40, protecting against dust and small solid objects. Outdoor and weatherproof models carry higher ratings such as IP65 to resist dust, water spray and outdoor exposure.

How can I get assistance selecting the right load centre?

Contact our technical support team with your load schedule, number of circuits, available wall space and environmental conditions. We’ll guide you to the correct pole count, phase type, enclosure style and current rating. Request a quote or support today.
