In the realm of industrial machinery, where operational efficiency and reliability are paramount, the choice of motor can significantly impact productivity and long-term performance. ABB, a global leader in industrial technology, has developed a solution that exemplifies engineering excellence: the ABB Roller table motor. Engineered for excellent reliability over a long lifetime, these motors are built to thrive in tough environments—enduring high temperatures, mechanical shocks, and harsh, dirty conditions—making them the optimal solution for demanding industrial environments. With unparalleled flexibility, ABB Roller table motors can be customised to meet the exact demands of any application.
Robust Design for Tough Environments
ABB Roller Table Motors are low-speed, squirrel cage motors specially designed for use with frequency converters. These motors are robust in construction, fully sealed to withstand the tough conditions in rolling mills. With the ability to be controlled steplessly by one or more frequency converters, they offer precise and adaptable speed control.
The rolling mill environment places severe stress on roller table drives. As plates and billets travel along the roller table, the motors driving the rollers are subjected to high torque loads. At the same time, the reliability of the drive system is constantly threatened by high ambient temperatures, humidity, and the risk of fine dust particles infiltrating the motors. To meet these rigorous demands, ABB has developed its Roller Table AC Drive System, which combines the new, robust M3RP induction motors with ABB frequency converters.
The totally enclosed construction of the M3RP induction motors renders them immune to the ingress of moisture and dust. Additionally, the power factor of ABB frequency converters with IGBT supply units is 1.0 under any load conditions. Together, the motor and frequency converter provide a competitive solution with high availability and minimal maintenance costs.
Customisable and Efficient Solutions
ABB Roller Table Motors provide great flexibility for specific solutions and can be individually designed to meet the exact demands of the application. The terminal box can be mounted on the non-drive end, away from the hot metal, or equipped with quick connectors for rapid installation. Temperature sensors, encoders, and brakes can be added, winding insulation further strengthened, or shaft material altered. Motors that can be pressurised to exclude dust are also available, ensuring optimal performance in even the most challenging environments.
For optimal results, the motors are tailored to match the roller table’s operating profile and can be directly connected to the rollers. They provide high torque, with surge torques up to 400%, and the power for rapid acceleration, fast reversals, and frequent transitions from peak torque to zero load and back. The pole number and frequency can be selected, eliminating the need for gearboxes and saving on maintenance costs while increasing the overall efficiency of the drive.
Efficiency and Adaptability
Intended for direct connection to rollers, ABB Roller Table Motors eliminate the need for gearboxes, resulting in reduced maintenance costs and improved overall drive efficiency. The flexibility to select the pole number and operating frequency further enhances their adaptability to specific applications.
Available in sizes 132 to 450, ABB Roller Table Motors are designed to suit a wide range of industrial applications. These motors are highly customisable, ensuring a precise fit for specific processes and maximising operational efficiency and reliability. Assembly dimensions and shaft heights comply with IEC 60072-1 standards. The standard motor mounting position is B3/IM1001, while flange mounting (IM B5/IM3001) is possible for shaft heights 132 to 250 upon request.
The motors are protected to IP55 as standard, with higher protection levels up to IP66 available for increased resistance to water and dust ingress. Additionally, the stator frame of M3RP motors can be pressurised with air to prevent contamination if required.
